Lime-Prep Primer

Lime needs something mineral to hold. Drywall and painted walls give it nothing, so Lime-Prep gives it a ground. One quiet coat, rolled thin, and the wall is ready to take limewash or Modern Lime Paint. The brushwork settles in, the movement shows, and the color reads true to the sample.

Choose the base for the color above it. White sits beneath mid-tone and deeper shades such as Cacao or Carbone. Contrast Gray sits beneath Bianca, Calcare and the other pale colors, lending a shade of depth that lets the movement come through.

Bare brick, stone and lime plaster are porous already. They take limewash without it.

Specifications

  • Bases: White · Contrast Gray
  • Sizes: Gallon (est. coverage 350 sq ft) · Quart (est. coverage 85 sq ft) · 4 oz sample jar
  • Surfaces: primed or painted drywall; painted, sealed or stained wood; many previously finished interior surfaces. Bare, unsealed wood doesn't need it; on high-tannin wood, apply a sealing primer first.
  • Type: bonding primer, not a sealing primer. New drywall, or any surface that would normally need primer, gets a water-based sealing primer first, such as Thrive Primer.
  • Apply: one coat, with a microfiber roller or by spray
  • Dry: about 2 hours before limewash or Modern Lime Paint at 70°F and moderate humidity; allow longer in cooler or more humid rooms
  • Then: two coats of limewash or Modern Lime Paint
  • Zero VOC (under 5 g/L), low odor, interior use
  • Typically ships within 2 business days

For walls people brush past, add Limewash Densifier to the final coat of limewash; for walls that need wiping, finish with Matte Protective Sealer. Test your color over the base first with a hand-painted card or sample jar, and follow the full prep sequence in the wall prep guide.
